Privacy policy
Last updated 25 October 2026
The short version
- We only store what we need to write tonight's story and run the lamp.
- You don't need a name, email or password to use Storylight.
- No ads. We don't sell anything about you or your child, and we don't track you across other apps or websites.
- Usage statistics are off until you turn them on.
- You can delete everything yourself in the app, at any time.
Who is responsible
Storylight is made by Nils Andersson Bunge, who is the data controller for the information described here. Write to us at nils.andersson@live.se with any question about your data.
What we store and why
Your child's world
When you set up Storylight, you tell us your child's first name, the story language, the language level and story length, the kinds of stories they like, the storyteller, the things they love, the people in their world (first name, who they are to your child, the picture you pick and an optional small detail), places, and your evening rhythm and time zone. We use this to write a new story for your child every night and to know when it should be ready.
The stories
We keep each story's text, title, summary and audio recording, whether you marked it as a favourite, and how far it played. We use this so you can listen again, so new stories don't repeat old ones, for sequels if you turn them on, and so the lamp knows when to switch to the sea sound.
The lamp
For a paired lamp we store its name, its settings, when it was last online, and whether it is charging or its battery level. A short pairing code connects it to your phone and expires soon after.
Your account
The app creates an anonymous account when you start, with no name, email or password. If you choose to sign in on another phone, we use your email address to send you a one-time code, and keep it with the account so you can sign in again. We also store your free minutes, extra stories and which plan you have.
Payments
Plans are bought through Apple. Apple handles the payment, and we never see your card details. We only learn which plan is active.
Shared stories
If you share a story, we create a link that works for 7 days. Anyone with the link can see your child's name, the name of the person you shared it with, if you picked one, as you wrote them in the app, and the story's title, and can listen to roughly the first 90 seconds. Other people in the story can be named in the title and in those first 90 seconds. They don't see the summary, and can't get the rest of the recording. To do this, we keep a short recording of the beginning with the story, and delete it when the story or your account is deleted. You can stop sharing a link in the app at any time, and then it stops working.
Usage statistics, only if you say yes
Statistics are off until you turn on Share anonymous usage statistics in Settings. Then the app sends one event when you finish setting up, with a random number made on your phone. It is not linked to your account, your child or anything you wrote, and location lookup is turned off. Like any connection over the internet, the request carries your phone's IP address. You can turn statistics off at any time, and the random number is then deleted from your phone.
Who helps us
These companies process data on our behalf. They may only use it to provide their service to us.
| Company | What they do | What they get | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Database, sign-in, file storage and the server functions | Everything listed above, except statistics | Stockholm, Sweden |
| Anthropic | Writes each story and checks it before it plays | Your child's first name, language, level, length and kinds of stories, the things they love, one or two of their people (first name, who they are and the detail), places, and the titles and summaries of recent stories | USA |
| ElevenLabs | Reads the story aloud with the storyteller you chose | The finished story text | USA |
| PostHog | Usage statistics, only if you turned them on | The event and the random number | EU |
| Apple | Payments for plans | Handled by Apple under Apple's own privacy policy |
When data goes to the USA, it is protected by the EU–US Data Privacy Framework or the EU's standard contractual clauses. We don't use your child's information to train AI models.
Why we are allowed to
- To give you the service you asked for (GDPR article 6.1 b): your child's world, the stories, the lamp, your account and shared links.
- Your consent (article 6.1 a): usage statistics. You can withdraw it at any time.
About your child
Storylight is used by parents. Your child never needs the phone or an account. You decide what to tell us: first names and small everyday details are enough. Please don't add surnames, addresses, health information or anything you wouldn't want in a story.
How long we keep it
- Your child's world, the stories and the lamp: until you delete them or your account.
- Shared links: they stop working after 7 days.
- Statistics: they can't be linked back to you. Write to us if you want us to look for them anyway.
Deleting the app from your phone does not delete your account. Delete it in Settings first, or write to us.
Delete everything
In the app, go to Settings and tap Delete account and all data. This deletes the recordings, then your account, and with it your child's world, every story, the lamp's connection and your shared links, on our servers and on your phone. It can't be undone.
Your rights
You have the right to see the data we have about you and your child, to correct it, to have it deleted, to limit or object to how we use it, and to get a copy to take elsewhere. Write to nils.andersson@live.se. If you think we handle data wrongly, you can also complain to the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection, IMY.
Changes
If we change this policy, we update the date at the top. If a change affects what we store about you, we tell you in the app first.
